The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, has commended Nigerians and legal residents for their dedicated support during the exercise to link the National Identification Number (NIN) to the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM).

According to a statement made available by the Nigeria Communications Commission signed by Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, it appears that currently more than 125 million SIMs have submitted their NINs for instant pairing, verification and authentication.

In addition, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued more than 78 million unique NINs to date. Recall that President Buhari has given the instructions for the implementation and start of the exercise in December 2020, as part of the government’s security and social policy.

Also remember that the deadline for the NIN-SIM pairing has been extended several times to give Nigerians the free opportunity to fulfill it.

The federal government also took into account the impassioned appeals from several agencies – Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), civil society organisations, professional bodies and many others – for past deadline extensions. The chairman approved the many requests to extend the deadlines for the NIN-SIM link.

However, at the moment the government has determined that the implementation of the NIN-SIM policy can continue as machines have already been set up to ensure compliance by citizens and legal residents.

The implementation has implications for the government’s strategic planning, in particular in the areas of security and socio-economic projections. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the implementation of the policy, effective April 4, 2022.

Consequently, the Federal Government has instructed all telecom companies to strictly enforce the policy on all SIMs issued (existing and new) in Nigeria. Outgoing calls will then be barred from phone lines that do not comply with the NIN-SIM pairing policy from the 4th of April 2022. Subscribers of such lines are hereby advised to pair their SIMs to their NINs before the Telcos can lift the restriction on their lines.
