He is the second Nigerian to have won a medal at the Games, after Olarionoye Adijat previously won gold.
Athlete Edidiong Umoafia took the bronze medal in men’s weightlifting on Day 4 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He lifted a total of 290 kg to get on the men’s podium of 67 kg.
This became Nigeria’s second medal at the games after Adijat Olarinoye’s gold medal in the women’s weightlifting on Saturday. Umoafia successfully won a bronze medal for Nigeria in weightlifting at the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games on Sunday, Completesports.com reports.
In the men’s 67kg category, Umoafia lifted a combined 290kg (Snatch, Clean and Jerk) to take the podium. It is Team Nigeria’s second medal at the Games, after Adijat Olarinoye’s gold medal in the women’s weightlifting on Saturday.
Umoafia was beaten to the gold medal by Jeremy Lalrinnunga of India, who lifted 300 kg, a competition record. Vipava Ioane from Samoa took the silver medal with a lift of 293 kg.
Later in the day (Sunday), Rafiatu Lawal hopes to match Olarinoye and Umoafia when she takes on other entrants in the women’s 59kg final. Team Nigeria is still in ninth place with one gold and one bronze medal in the ranking.
