Born in Benin on June 14, 2002, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe is a Nigerian singer better known by her stage name Ayra Starr. Before deciding to pursue a career in music, she started a modeling career with Quove Model Management when she was 16 years old.

She shared her first original song to her page in December 2019 after recreating a lot of well-known songs on Instagram. Don Jazzy, a record executive, saw her as a consequence and signed her to his Mavin Records company.

Early in 2021, Starr broke through to the wider public with her self-titled debut extended play and the single “Away,” which spent two weeks in a row at number four on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 list and peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top Thriller Global chart. This accomplishment cleared the door for the 2021 release of Starr’s debut full-length mixtape, 19 and Dangerous.

Early Life

Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe was born in Cotonou, Bénin on 14 June 2002, and grew up in Lagos, Nigeria. She was born to Nigerian parents from Kwara State and has four siblings: brothers Ade and Dami, two sisters Tolulope and Jesutunmise.

Her family relocated frequently during her high school years due to her father’s business, and as a result she had a hard time developing close friends. Having been reared in a music-loving family, her love in singing stems primarily from her family. At the age of 10, she sung in a high school chorus and began creating songs with her brother.


Ayra Starr attended Les Cours Sonou University and obtained a BA degree in international affairs and political science, her classmates often ridiculed her due of her age and appearance.

To fight the sentiments she received from being taunted, Ayra Starr turned to music by listening to Nicki Minaj’s music on her walk to school. Ayra Starr’s mother was highly supportive of her musical goals and constantly encouraged her to pursue a singing career.

Musical Career

In August 2018, Starr got signed with Quove Models, a modeling agency based in Lagos. From then, she modeled for firms such as Mazelle Studio, Complete Fashion Magazine and Esperanza Woman.

In 2019, she began publishing renditions of songs by musicians like Andra Day and 2Face Idibia online. She selected her stage name because, in her words, “it means woke and eye-opening and that’s what I stand for.”She appeared in the music video for Eri Ife’s song “Dear Future Wife.”

In 2020, she started recording at Mavin Studios in Lagos with producers Louddaaa and Don Jazzy. Her self-titled debut extended play was published on 22 January 2021 through Mavin Records. The album has been described as “a topsy-turvy chronicle of love or love-themed situations” and “merges elements of R&B/neo-soul with Afropop percussion.”

Ayra Starr said her objective with the record was to develop music that would appeal with both young and old listeners. Starr composed one of the songs on the EP alone, and co-authored the remaining four with her brother Dami. Shortly after its release, the EP became the number-one album on Nigeria iTunes and Apple Music.

On 11 July 2021, Ayra Starr participated for the season finale of Nigerian Idol. On 6 August 2021, her debut studio album, titled 19 & Dangerous was published. For the album, she worked with her previous colleagues Louddaaa and Don Jazzy, both of whom provided production on her EP Ayra Starr, and new collaborators, London and Andre Vibez.

The song climbed the Top 50 for several weeks, then, on the chart dated 27 September 2021, it reached the number one place, making Ayra Starr the first female artist to do so with a solo single.

Personal Life

Ayra Starr lost her dad to the icy clutches of death in 2018. This loss upset Ayra a lot because she was very close to her father. She has composed and sang some songs as a tribute to her dad. She lives with her mother and brother in the Mainland portion of Lagos.

Ayra Starr has no boyfriend or husband for now. Her recent hit song, “Away” reveals the sorrow she suffered after leaving her last relationship. She sings of being emancipated and finding strength in it. She has also claimed that she freestyled several of the verses.
